ViaRhôna: Your stage-by-stage guide by Pausado, from Haute-Savoie to the Mediterranean

ViaRhôna: Your stage-by-stage guide by Pausado, from Haute-Savoie to the Mediterranean

Cycling along the ViaRhôna (EuroVelo 17) is an epic 815-kilometre journey, from the deep blue of Lake Geneva to the silvery glints of the Mediterranean. Whether you’re a keen cyclist or a fan of leisurely cycle touring, the success of your journey depends on a simple balance: beautiful routes by day and a good night’s rest by night.

At Pausado, we know that for a cyclist, every stage is a memory in its own right. We have selected three strategic stop-offs along the route to allow you to recharge your batteries (and your bike’s) in a natural and peaceful setting.

1. Heading for the Alps: The start (or the grand finale) on the shores of Lake Geneva

This is where it all begins (or ends). Nestled between the Alpine peaks and the vast expanse of the lake, the first few kilometres of the ViaRhôna offer a unique atmosphere.

  • The stage: Messery and Excenevex.
  • Your Pausado holiday homes: Le Relais du Léman and Le Léman Plage.
  • The experience: Take the opportunity to take a dip in the lake and relax your muscles after a day in the saddle. These campsites are ideal for sorting out your departure arrangements or savouring the end of a cross-border ride.

2. A Glimpse of the Ardèche: Nature at the heart of the endeavour

Once past Lyon, the Rhône flows into wilder landscapes. The Ardèche is a region full of character, where every turn of the pedals reveals a new vista.

  • The stage: Southern Ardèche (Lussas).
  • Your Pausado holiday home: Le Ludo Camping.
  • The experience: A slight detour from the riverbed takes you to a lush green setting. It’s the perfect stop for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the valley and treat themselves to a night of absolute tranquillity, surrounded by the Ardèche hills.

3. Off to the Camargue: Arles, where the river meets the sea

Provence welcomes you with its sun-drenched roads and the scents of the garrigue. Arles marks the entrance to the delta, a promised land for cyclists seeking flat, unspoilt horizons.

  • The stage: Arles.
  • Your Pausado accommodation:Camping City.
  • The experience: Situated at the junction of the ViaRhôna and the Méditerranée à Vélo cycle routes, this stopover allows you to combine culture and sport. Explore the ancient city by bike before heading off to Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.
